The story

A vineyard below the monastery.

Srebrna Góra means Silver Hill. It rises at Bielany, on the western edge of Kraków, with the Camaldolese monastery at the top and the vines below it. The estate was founded in 2008 and farms 28 hectares, a large vineyard by Polish standards.

Limestone keeps the wine honest. If we pick too late, it tells us.
The winemaker

The ground is Jurassic limestone with loess over it, part of the Jura uplands that run north-west from the city. Limestone gives the wines a firm, fine line; the loess, which holds water and warms quickly, gives them flesh. The Vistula runs below the hill, and on clear nights the cool air drains toward it.

Old oak barrels stand beneath a low brick cellar vault lit by a small window.

Pinot Noir is the estate's main red, fermented in steel and finished in older oak. Riesling is picked late and stays in steel. The wines are cool and precise, and better after a year or two in bottle. We import one of each.

Harvest notes by vintage

What each year did.

2023
A warm summer and a slow, dry autumn. Riesling picked in mid-October, fully ripe and still high in acidity; a normal crop.
2022
A hot, dry July, then rain in September. Pinot Noir picked in the last week of the month; small berries, fine tannin.
