The story

A family name and a dark grape.

Winnica Płochockich means the Płochocki family's vineyard, and the name is the brief. It is a small estate in the hills around Sandomierz, a town on the Vistula and the centre of the Sandomierz Wine Route.

It is our name on the label, so we taste every barrel.
The family

The ground is loess over limestone, and the region gets between 550 and 800 millimetres of rain a year. Loess holds that water and gives the wines a soft middle; the limestone underneath gives them a firm finish. The rows face south, toward the river.

Old oak barrels fill a small low cellar with daylight falling down stone steps from an open hatch.

St. Laurent is not a common grape in Poland. It is dark-skinned and soft in tannin, and on these slopes it makes a red with dark fruit and the acidity of a cool site. The family picks by hand, ferments in steel with native yeast and ages the wine in older oak. We import one wine from the estate.

Harvest notes by vintage

What each year did.

2023
A warm summer and a dry autumn. St. Laurent picked in late September, fully ripe, at a normal yield.
2022
Heat in July, then rain in September. The St. Laurent was picked between showers in the last week of the month; small berries and dark colour.
