The story

Clay vessels, white grapes, long skin contact.

Winnica Jakubów is a small estate in Lower Silesia, Poland's mildest wine region, and its wines are made in amphorae.

The amphora does less than people think. Mostly it gets out of the way.
The winemaker

Clay is an old way to make wine and a simple one. The vessel breathes a little, like a barrel, but adds no taste of wood, so what comes through is the grape and its skins. White grapes are left on their skins through fermentation and beyond, which gives the wines their amber colour and a fine, dry tannin.

Large clay amphorae stand against a limewashed cellar wall in soft window light.

The volumes are small and change with the year. The wine we import is an orange wine from amphora: savoury, gently bitter, built for food. It needs air and a glass with room in it, and it rewards both.

Harvest notes by vintage

What each year did.

2023
A long, dry autumn and clean fruit. The skins ripened fully, which is what an amphora wine needs.
2022
Heat in July and rain in September. The grapes for the amphora wine were picked in late September and left on their skins for several weeks.
