The story
Zweigelt was crossed at Klosterneuburg in 1922 by Friedrich Zweigelt, from St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch. It is one of Austria's signature grapes, and small plantings now exist in Poland.
It takes something from each parent: the juiciness of St. Laurent, a little of Blaufränkisch's spice. The wines are usually light and fresh, with blueberry and sour cherry, gentle tannin and a faint bitterness at the end. It is a red for drinking rather than waiting, and it tends to take a light chill well.
