The story
Blaufränkisch is one red grape under many names: Frankovka in Czechia, Frankovka modrá in Slovakia, Kékfrankos in Hungary, Modra frankinja in Slovenia, and Lemberger. Its exact birthplace is unknown, though it probably comes from Lower Styria, in today's Slovenia. Its parents are Gouais blanc and Blaue Zimmettraube, and it is itself a parent of Zweigelt.
It is a firm, dark red: blackberry, sour cherry, pepper, with bright acidity and real tannin. In Hungary it ripens fully.
