The story
Hibernal was crossed at Geisenheim in 1944 by Heinrich Birk, from the French hybrid Seibel 7053 and Riesling. It is a PIWI, bred for cold and for resistance to disease. In Poland it grows in West Pomerania, about 100 km from the Baltic.
It is often compared to Sauvignon Blanc: gooseberry, cut grass, green herbs, with brisk acidity and a light body. The Riesling side adds some citrus and a firm line. Most is made dry or nearly dry and drunk young.
