Origin
Probably Tokaj, Hungary
Where it grows
Hungary
Typical winemaking
steel or oak; dry, and sweet from late-harvested grapes

The story

Furmint is Hungary's signature white, probably born in Tokaj, and a parent of Hárslevelű. It is also known as Šipon in Slovenia, and as Mosler. It makes both dry and sweet wine, and in Hungary it ripens fully.

The acidity is the constant: high and firm. Around it come quince, lemon and a little smoke and, in the sweet wines, apricot and honey. Dry single-vineyard Furmint shows how much the grape carries from its site.
